Tolga Cankurtaran was appointed Director, Strategy and Performance of the North Carolina State Ports Authority in April of 2015.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Cankurtaran is responsible for the implementation of the Authority’s strategic plan, which includes business analysis and process improvement functions. He also oversees the procurement group and the Charlotte Inland Terminal.
Mr. Cankurtaran has over 15 years of experience in the terminal management and container shipping industries having worked in both domestic and international trades. Prior to joining the Port, he spent 11 years with Horizon Lines holding various positions and most recently served as Senior Director, Strategic Planning & Business Development where he provided leadership in revenue and margin improvement, execution and support of strategic growth plans, and cost reduction/continuous improvement initiatives. Mr. Cankurtaran was also instrumental in leading cross-functional teams through project implementation.
In addition to his experience with Horizon Lines, Mr. Cankurtaran spent over three years with CSX World Terminals where he started his career in the maritime transportation industry. During this time, he was involved in the analysis and valuation of new terminal development opportunities and the management of a global capital budget.
Mr. Cankurtaran holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned his MBA at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Management and Finance.
