Dave Solorzano was appointed Safety and Security Director of the North Carolina State Ports Authority in February of 2016. Mr. Solorzano is responsible for overseeing safety programs at the Port of Wilmington and the Port of Morehead City. He coordinates and directs incident response and represents the Ports on local emergency planning committees. He also provides guidance and quality assurance over various training programs.
Prior to his role as Safety and Security Director, Mr. Solorzano served as a Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander with over 25 years of experience in the maritime industry. He advanced through the Coast Guard ranks and was selected for promotion to Chief Machinery Technician while simultaneously being selected to attend Officer Candidate School at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Upon receiving his commission, he left the Coast Guard’s operational community to gain extensive experience in the prevention field conducting waterfront facility and vessel inspections, disaster response, and marine casualty investigations. He was also assigned to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC for two tours and obtained a strong understanding of high level organizational management.
Mr. Solorzano holds a bachelor’s of science degree from the Park University. He also holds a Coast Guard Master’s License with over 15 years of experience operating at sea. As a retired Lieutenant Commander, Mr. Solorzano was recognized with a number of military decorations including five Coast Guard Commendation Medals, multiple Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and four Commandant Letters of Commendation.
