Port of Morehead City- Modernization and Revitalization of Barge Berths Project

An open-house style public meeting is being held at the Morehead City Train Depot on June 12, 2025 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. for the Modernization and Revitalization of Barge Berths Project. The North Carolina State Ports Authority is proposing the Modernization and Revitalization of Barge Berths Project that will rebuild two barge berths for the Phosphoric Acid Terminal at the Port of Morehead City. The barge berths service operations for Nutrien (a private fertilizer company) and are located at the northeast corner of the port, just north of the Arendell Street bridge (US 70).

The proposed project would rebuild the north berth, east berth, and a portion of the south stabilization wall. The north berth serves as an import berth for dry material barges and the east berth serves as an export berth for liquid acid barges.

The existing bulkheads are over 55 years old and at the end of its useful service life. The east berth is currently closed to service due to stability issues and the north berth is currently restricted to unloading one barge at a time. Without the proposed project both berths will be
completely closed by 2027.

An Environmental Assessment will be prepared for the proposed project in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
