North Carolina Ports has finished a number of customer-friendly improvements lately at The Port of Wilmington. Here are some of the highlights:
Completed Upgrades

BERTH RENOVATION AND EXPANSION
With completed berth renovations and more than 2,600 contiguous feet of container berth space, the Port of Wilmington is now able to operate two ultra-large container vessels simultaneously. We started operating two post-Panamax ships in April 2020.

TURNING BASIN EXPANSION AND HARBOR ENHANCEMENTS
Phase 2 of the turning basin expansion project is complete. The expansion allows for 14,000 TEU and larger ocean vessels to safely and efficiently turn around in the Wilmington Harbor. NC Ports is also working with its federal partners on necessary navigational harbor enhancements that will enable the Port of Wilmington to better accommodate deep-draft container vessels.

REFRIGERATED CONTAINER YARD
With the recent completion of Phase 2 of the Port of Wilmington’s refrigerated container yard, NC Ports now offers more than 1,500 reefer plugs with the ability to increase that number.

NEO-PANAMAX CRANES
The Port of Wilmington has three, fully operational neo-Panamax cranes.
Built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (ZPMC), the cranes accommodate the loading and unloading needs of ultra-large container vessels reaching the United States East Coast. These cranes allow the Port of Wilmington to simultaneously service two neo-Panamax vessels, creating opportunities for both Port customers and the community at large.
